Learn Acehnese dance and body percussion
Get ready to move in this energetic dance and music workshop with Alfira and Murtala from Suara Indonesia Dance. This immersive masterclass explores communal dance practices from Aceh and West Sumatra. Through shared movement, this workshop fosters a deep sense of connection and belonging.
Experience the rhythmic intricacy of Ratoh Duek – a seated body percussion dance featuring clapping, upper-body percussion, and traditional songs – followed by Randai, where rhythm, sound, and martial arts blend through the dynamic use of Galembong pants.
You will take part in an active, hands-on experience of Indonesian dance and music, with simple movements, rhythms and cultural context that can be adapted easily for your primary classrooms.
This class will include drumming, sitting on your knees, body percussion, vocals, and learning specific rhythmic patterns. Indonesian language is also incorporated in the learning process of the workshop to create a holistic learning experience.
Suara Indonesia Dance was featured in the 2026 season of ABC Let’s Sing! Visit the ABC Education website to see Alfira, Murtala and members of their dance troupe sharing their sitting dances.
