Elective session
Creating harmony: culturally diverse approaches to Music Education
Music is celebrated for its ability to transcend spoken language and bridge cultural divides. The updated syllabus documents have a renewed focus on cultural diversity. This workshop aims to give teachers the tools to address this in meaningful ways. Teachers have the wonderful opportunity to reflect the cultural diversity of our community in the classroom.
In this workshop, you will learn respectful ways to engage in cultural appreciation and music making, often in styles and genres that you are not familiar with. We use the example of South Asian dance and music forms to explore the ways that learners from all backgrounds can experience cultural appreciation in meaningful ways. Participants will engage in critical thinking about inclusive ways to engage in cultural artforms, while being guided through cultural music and movement pedagogies.
This presentation will centre joy and connection as participants collaborate to create a meaningful cultural exchange.
