As AYO’s Music in Me program celebrates 10 years, we have been catching up with our music friends and colleagues to hear what impact they have seen as part of Music in Me and their involvement in the program.

Louise Barkl, current Music in Me Education Advisor, stopped by the Australian Youth Orchestra office to tell us about her experiences with the program over the years. Louise was instrumental in bringing the Music in Me program to NSW Department of Education schools, and today the program continues to thrive as part of NSW, The Arts Unit. 

The initial idea and the program’s scalability

Louise shares her memories of the determination of the late Richard Gill AO. His vision to ensure that every child receives a good quality music education and bringing this mentoring project to life. Digging into our archives, we have been lucky to find footage of Richard Gill himself speaking on what sparked the initial idea, and what he envisaged for the program.

The unique impact of the program is also in its scalability and impact over time, and Louise tells us about the ‘slow-burn’ approach. The idea of the compounding effects of teacher mentoring is also highlighted by Richard.
